Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

WHAT IS IMS?

IMS is a therapeutic treatment where fine needles are inserted into tight and sore muscles for the purpose of resetting or releasing them. It is common with many injuries and conditions for tight bands (trigger points or knots) to develop within muscles that propagate pain and prevent proper healing. IMS is used to release tight muscles in order to return them to their normal, healthy state. Additionally, IMS can relieve nerve irritation and help restore muscle imbalances.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?

What you experience feels like a brief muscle cramp that is caused by the muscle grasping the needle. This grasping feeling will then, in turn, become a feeling of release as the tightened and shortened muscle relaxes. The sensation described is called the "twitch response" and is important to gain lasting relief.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTERWARDS?

It is common to feel some post-treatment soreness in the areas that were treated, much like a hard workout at the gym. This does not always occur but is expected and is considered normal. It is also common to feel tired or fatigued, emotional, “out of it”, or even energized after treatment. This is a normal response and can last into the next morning.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY TREATMENT?

Depending on your condition, your therapist might recommend to perform specific exercises after your treatment. For more acute or painful condition, heat, ice or a light walk is recommended.

After releasing the tight muscles, we are able to more easily retrain your movement patterns to improve how your body moves and performs. This combined approach will help prevent the return of tightness in these muscles and will greatly decrease the likelihood of re-injury.

Medical Acupuncture

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Originating in China, acupuncture is a therapeutic technique involving the insertion of extremely fine needles into specific points on the body.  Insertion of needles produces both a local effect on any tissues (muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments) in the area, as well as more global effects on the body via the nervous

system.  Both traditional and medical acupuncture have been proven to be extremely effective in treating pain and inflammation in orthopaedic conditions.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?

Acupuncture is extremely gentle and the sensation you will feel when being needled is usually fairly minimal. Generally, the goal is to feel a light tingling, heaviness or mild aching, but occasionally you will feel nothing at all in the location of the needle. After the needles are inserted you are usually left to rest for a period of 10 – 20 minutes. Most people feel fairly relaxed during this period and many simply fall asleep.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTERWARDS?

It is common to feel relaxed and revitalized after acupuncture. Soreness after the treatment is uncommon.
